(And alchemy was not a purely Western concern—there is also Islamic and Chinese alchemy.)
\r\nBut in addition to these practical concerns, many alchemical writers used the metaphors of alchemy as a way to talk about the Spiritual Path under the radar of the Inquisition and other unsympathetic religious authorities. (You were just as likely to be burned at the stake by the Protestants as the Catholics). For example, for these writers, turning lead into gold was a metaphor for turning the Human Heart from Lead into Gold—in other words, the path to Enlightenment. This has come to be known as "Inner Alchemy". One of the first researchers to significantly explore this field was Carl Jung.
\r\nThese "inner alchemists" left behind an enormous body of literature—and images. I have found this literature, and its images, to be marvelous metaphors for my own Life Path, and an empowering source of inspiration for composing music. At this point I\'ve barely started on a body of "Inner Alchemical Music", but time and diligence will take care of that!
\r\nSo, in my blog you\'ll find Inner Alchemical images with discussions, and the music I\'ve composed to go with them.

The Passionate Quest (for glass armonica and chamber orchestra) is based on the earliest complete surviving\r\n Grail story, written by Eschenbach around 1100\r\n AD—himself an impoverished itinerant knight. In\r\n this account of the Grail legend, Percival, the hero, begins as\r\n a naive young man who wants to be a knight; he passes through various\r\n mythic trials and tribulations, and ultimately is crowned the new Grail\r\n King.
\r\nEschenbach wisely never identifies the nature of the Grail (equating\r\n the Grail to the cup of Jesus\' Last Supper was centuries later).\r\n That leaves it up to us—what is the Grail for you?\r\n\r\n What are you seeking?

\r\nIn\r\n1995 William stumbled across a recording by Bruno Hoffmann of the music\r\nby Mozart for the glass armonica. "This is really beautiful—I\'m going\r\nto do this!" Master glassblower Gerhard Finkenbeiner of Waltham, WA\r\n(alas, no longer with us) blew a set of glasses for William, and the\r\nrest of the instrument was fabricated in Seattle where William lived at\r\nthe time. Then—unable to find a teacher—William taught himself how to\r\nplay it.
\r\nWilliam is currently collaborating with Cal-Glass for Research\r\nto manufacture glass armonicas. William paid his own tuition and living\r\nexpenses through the California Institute of the Arts (supplemented by\r\na California State Scholarship awarded for academic achievement)\r\nbuilding harpsichords and restoring pianos, so he is comfortable in a\r\nshop setting. He blew glass for 2 years to understand the medium (as\r\nWilliam says: "I don\'t need to blow the glasses myself, but I must have\r\nsome idea what I\'m talking about when I\'m talking to a real\r\nglassblower). He also holds a Lifetime Teaching Credential in\r\ncollege-level Mathematics and has taught statistics and calculus, so,\r\nas William says, "I can speak \'engineering\' and access the scientific\r\nliterature on the physics of glass bells". Combined with Cal-Glass\'s\r\ndecades of precision glass fabrication expertise, they expect to have\r\ntheir first glass armonica \'out the door\' in early 2008 (although\r\nR&D is difficult to schedule). \r\nAnybody who has ever made a musical tone by rubbing the lip of a wine glass can appreciate the armonica, one of the most ethereal instruments ever created.

Invented by\r\n Benjamin Franklin in 1761, it enchanted a generation of classical composers\r\n and upper-class music lovers in Europe and America. The armonica\'s tones,\r\n produced by glass bowls of graduated sizes, were reputed to mimic the\r\n angels, mesmerize helpless listeners and awaken the spirits of the departed.
\r\nA few decades later, the armonica nearly disappeared because of changing musical tastes and unfounded fears that it caused emotional maladies. But thanks to William Zeitler of Marysville and a few dozen other musicians around the world, it has been resurrected.
\r\nZeitler\'s armonica is 44 glass bowls aligned on a slowly spinning rod, like a rotisserie. Each bowl yields one tone, reaching from middle C to higher notes. Larger bowls produce lower pitches. Some bowls are gold-rimmed, identifying them as the equivalents of the black keys of a piano.
\r\nTo play them, he wets the bowls, and lays his fingers on the desired notes\r\n -- always rubbing below the first knuckle, because fingertips are too\r\n soft to produce the ideal friction. To locate the prime combination of\r\n rotational speed and finger pressure is a painstaking art.
\r\nYet Zeitler seemed effortless as he played the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," "Jingle Bells," and "Stairway to Heaven" at a Belltown glass-blowing studio this week.
\r\nThe notes sound softer than a bell, airier than a piano. Slight variations\r\n in friction cause endearing blemishes, like the voice of a nervous young\r\n soprano. The armonica fills a room but easily can be overpowered by deeper\r\n or louder instruments.
\r\n"It\'s just a stupendous piece of imagination," Zeitler said. "A beautiful think like this shouldn\'t be on the endangered-musical-instrument list."
\r\nZeitler has recorded four compact discs of original music: "The Passionate\r\n Quest: A Romance of the Grail," "The Midwinter Phantasy," "Elegy for Atlantis"\r\n and "Songs from Earth." Armonicas are featured in New Age recordings for\r\n meditation or massage therapy. Zeitler has performed the Adagio in C for\r\n Glass Armonica by Mozart in concert at the University of Washington.
\r\n\r\nHe will play two Christmas concerts at Bellevue\'s "Garden D\'Lights" tomorrow and Sunday.

Franklin was inspired\r\n to create the armonica after he saw a musician play water-filled goblets.\r\n Franklin sought a similar effect in a device that would not require water\r\n and would be compact enough so he could play chords. He christened it\r\n the "armonica," and Italian word for harmony.
The armonica spread quickly in Europe, where Mozart, Beethoven and others\r\n wrote more than 300 compositions for it.
\r\nBut before long it fell in to disrepute, its celestial sounds blamed for domestic violence, premature births and insanity. The instrument was banned in some German states, and fewer musicians were willing to play it.
\r\nA music instructor warned, "If you have been upset by harmful novels,\r\n false friends or perhaps a deceiving girl, then abstain from playing the\r\n armonica -- it will only upset you even more."
\r\nPsychiatrist Franz Mesmer of Vienna used the armonica to hypnotize his\r\n patients, fueling rumors that the armonica wielded unworldly powers. The\r\n instrument also had the practical disadvantage of being too fragile for\r\n transport on bumpy cobblestone roads.
\r\nIts demise was nearly complete by the mid-19th century, when the armonica and the harpsichord were drowned out by a new era of large concert halls and thousand-piece symphonies, Zeitler says.
\r\nThe armonica\'s modern-day revival began in 1982 when Gerhard Finkenbeiner, a German immigrant in Waltham, Mass., began building armonicas using techniques and equipment from his job as a glass blower for technology companies. His company has produced 150 to 200 instruments to date and ships them around the globe.
\r\nAn armonica sells for $5,000 to $30,000, with those of greater range\r\n or lower tones costing more because larger bowls take longer to build,\r\n said Shaun Conroy, a turner at Finkenbeiner\'s company. The quartz glass\r\n must be heated to around 2,900 degrees Fahrenheit before it can be shaped\r\n into a bowl.
\r\nZeitler, 47, is a classical pianist and computer programmer who taught himself to play the armonica five years ago. His instrument combines Finkenbeiner bowls with a wooden table and other parts by Seattle artisans.
\r\nZeitler is learning to sculpt glass so he can mold his own bowls, as in Franklin\'s\r\n time. Once that skill is mastered, his dream is to open a shop on the\r\n Tulalip Reservation, where he would teach glass-blowing techniques to\r\n others, perpetuating the heritage of the armonica.

\r\nFounding Father\r\n of the Glass Armonica
\r\n\r\n

\r\nOne of America\'s Founding Fathers invented a musical instrument\r\n that inspired original scores from Mozart, Beethoven and other greats.\r\n That instrument is the glass armonica (named after the Italian word for\r\n harmonic), devised by Benjamin Franklin in 1761. And out of all of his\r\n inventions, Franklin once said it was the one that gave him the "greatest\r\n personal satisfaction." But for more than a century and a half this once-popular\r\n instrument—which employed glass bowls stacked horizontally inside one\r\n another and mounted on a small table—sat in disrepute, nearly lost\r\n to history.
\r\nNow, however, it\'s enjoying a bit of a revival. Thanks to\r\n the hard work of a handful of men and women over the past 20 years, the\r\n glass armonica is being heard at festivals, at elementary-school concerts\r\n and in at least one movie score. And Philadelphia\'s Franklin Institute\r\n will mark the inventor\'s 298th birthday on Saturday by having the instrument\r\n played during their celebration.
\r\nThe revival began with Gerhard Finkenbeiner, a glass blower\r\n who emigrated from Germany and set up shop in Waltham, Mass. Mr. Finkenbeiner\r\n -- who disappeared while piloting his private plane four years ago --\r\n was a master craftsman with a love for music. He built a business producing\r\n quartz glassware sold to pharmaceutical and other labs, but he never forgot\r\n learning about the armonica in Europe. In the early 1980s he dug up and\r\n began experimenting with Franklin\'s specifications, which called for 37\r\n glass bowls of 23 sizes and painted a rainbow of colors to mark different\r\n notes.
\r\nFranklin found he could make beautiful, haunting music using\r\n glass bowls if they had a hole in their center and were stacked inside\r\n one another while mounted on a horizontal rod. He dipped his fingers in\r\n water, spun the bowls using a foot treadle and then played them almost\r\n like a piano. Except that he could sculpt each note by varying the speed\r\n of the bowls and the amount of pressure he applied -- similar to how a\r\n violinist uses a bow.
\r\nThe idea of using glass to make music didn\'t originate with\r\n Franklin. It was already centuries old when he watched music being made\r\n from drinking glasses -- tuned by being filled with varying amounts of\r\n water -- while in England in the late 1750s and early \'60s. But Franklin\r\n wanted to make the process less cumbersome. So with the help of London\r\n glass blower Charles James he figured out how to tune a glass bowl by\r\n varying its thickness.
\r\nFranklin spent much of the American Revolution as a diplomat\r\n in France and often played his instrument for parlor audiences. Soon Europeans\r\n fell in love with it and began building their own. One story has Franklin\r\n curing Polish Princess Izabella Czartoryska of "melancholia" by playing\r\n the armonica for her. She liked it so much he gave her lessons. Marie\r\n Antoinette is said to have studied the instrument. Mozart and his father,\r\n Leopold, heard the armonica in Vienna in the 1770s. Wolfgang "has played\r\n upon it," Leopold wrote his wife. "How I should love to have one." And\r\n in 1791, the younger Mozart composed an Adagio for the armonica solo and\r\n the Adagio and Rondo for the armonica, flute, oboe, viola and cello.
\r\nBy the 1820s and \'30s, however, the armonica was gaining\r\n a reputation for driving musicians out of their minds. Marianne Kirchgessner\r\n eventually went insane after touring Europe playing it. J.C. Muller warned\r\n of its effect on the "temperament" in a 1788 instruction manual. Today\r\n many suspect the armonica\'s leaded glass and paint to be the real culprit,\r\n perhaps even contributing to Beethoven\'s likely lead poisoning.
\r\nToday there\'s no danger of lead poisoning. G. Finkenbeiner\r\n Inc. -- perhaps the only armonica manufacturer in the country -- uses\r\n lead-free quartz glass and sells armonicas for about $5,000 (larger or\r\n custom instruments can cost much more). Dean Shostak tours the country\r\n with his Finkenbeiner, playing in community concerts and even grammar\r\n schools. He lives and often performs in Williamsburg, Va. But whatever\r\n the venue, he powers it just as Franklin did, with a foot treadle. In\r\n a few months he\'ll release "The Glass Armonica" under his Coastline Music\r\n label -- his fifth CD featuring the instrument -- which will include classical\r\n music originally scored for the armonica but never before recorded.
\r\nWilliam Wilde Zeitler of Marysville, Wash., has been playing\r\n the instrument for nine years and will release his seventh armonica CD\r\n this spring, "The Secret Fire," under his Eris Records label. He performs\r\n around the country and will be playing at the Mind Body Spirit Expo in\r\n Santa Rosa, Calif., Feb. 7-8. But he writes his own music and powers his\r\n instrument with a small motor.
\r\nNot that he isn\'t enamored with the armonica\'s history and\r\n inventor: "I just have this vision of, after a hard day of being a Founding\r\n Father, Franklin coming in and unwinding with the armonica, which he invented,\r\n sitting next to the Franklin stove, which he invented, using bifocals,\r\n which he invented." Mr. Zeitler says he used to just play, but the audience\r\n would always stop him and demand, "You really have to tell us about this\r\n thing."

\r\nHe skillfully maneuvered his slippery hands along a series of rotating glasses known as a\r\n glass armonica. The music produced sounds as dainty as fairies would.
\r\nZeitler, 51, is the only full-time glass armonica player in the world, he said. He has researched and found less\r\n than a dozen people who play the rare, expensive instrument.
\r\nSince he first discovered the armonica - an invention of Benjamin Franklin - about 10 years ago,\r\n Zeitler has composed and performed music and tried to spread\r\n armonica awareness. He said the instrument fascinates him.
\r\n"I\'d like to get this off of the endangered musical instrument list," he said.\r\n The 3 1/2-foot-long and 1-foot-wide armonica sits in the parlor of the Riverside house\r\n where Zeitler rents a room. Sun\r\n glints off its 44 glasses, neatly aligned along an electric, rotating spindle.
\r\nThe concentric glasses are tuned and fit partially inside one another, almost like a set of wooden\r\n Russian nesting dolls. Large glasses carry low pitches and small glasses carry high pitches.
\r\nTo play the glass armonica, Zeitler touches the glasses with different parts of his wet fingers,\r\n almost like a bow to a violin, he said. Coats of boat varnish protect the instrument\'s wooden base from dripping water.
\r\n"It\'s the wet-finger-around-the-wineglass idea," he said.
\r\nZeitler said he tries to create peaceful, spiritual music.
\r\n"Forget for a minute that you haven\'t paid the gas bill yet and just chill and go to this special and happy place," Zeitler said.

The glass armonica has an extensive pedigree, starting with Franklin, who invented it after he attended a concert in which a musician played water-tuned wine glasses, Zeitler said.
He said he had to build most of the instrument himself. He bought the glasses from a Massachusetts maker, who is now dead.
\r\nWhen Zeitler was five, his parents purchased a piano, and he started taking lessons. Though his family moved frequently, Zeitler said his parents couldn\'t keep him away from the piano bench.
\r\nTo help pay tuition at California Institute of the Arts, where he earned his bachelor of fine arts degree, Zeitler built instruments and tuned pianos. He eventually stumbled across a recording of music Mozart had written for the glass armonica.
\r\nZeitler said he thought:" \'This is beautiful. I am going to do this.\'"
\r\nZeitler said one of his early piano teachers, Jack Reynolds, was his largest inspiration. He pursued the glass armonica largely because of a mindset Reynolds gave him, he said.\r\n"He just really taught me that if you\'re a creative person, you\'re going to have to create your own life," Zeitler said.
\r\nZeitler now has five CDs on sale and averages 20 performances a month, with extra work during the winter holidays, he said. Things can get hectic.
\r\n"Being a professional musician is not for wimps," he said.
\r\nOne of his regular venues is Downtown Disney, where listeners often give him business cards and invite him to other events. Zeitler appeared earlier this summer on The History Channel\'s "Modern Marvels." "He is the master of this instrument," said Zeitler\'s manager, Keith Richmond. Richmond has been booking Zeitler\'s performances and marketing his\r\n music for about two years.
\r\nZeitler is on a quest to produce more armonicas.
\r\nHe has been working with Cal-Glass for Research Inc. in Costa Mesa to come up with a glass-manufacturing process. He wants to find other companies to make additional instrument parts.
\r\nZeitler plans to be a general contractor of armonica production and estimated that one instrument would carry at least a five-figure price tag.
\r\nThe musician is also in the middle of writing what he said will be the first book about the glass armonica and musical glasses. He pours through sometimes centuries-old texts to garner information, mostly in foreign languages. Massive French, German and Latin dictionaries sit on his desk and help him decipher his sources.
\r\nOne tattered French text - carefully protected in a cardboard sheath - is from 1803, the year before Napoleon declared himself emperor of France.\r\n"I lurk on the Internet waiting for these things to show up," Zeitler said.
\r\n"You hate to see something disappear," Bradshaw said. "It\'s more than just sound waves (in) the air."
\r\nBen Franklin also fascinates Zeitler. Among other memorabilia, a Franklin bobble-head doll and action figure sit atop Zeitler\'s bookcase. Zeitler said he even made a "pilgrimage" to Philadelphia to see Franklin\'s glass armonica.
\r\nFranklin invented the lightening rod and bifocals, among other things. He came up with the glass armonica on the side, Zeitler said.\r\n"What he thinks of in a couple days, it takes me a whole lifetime to explore," Zeitler said.

Ben Franklin (1706-1790) was considered\r\n one of the world\'s foremost experts on electricity in his day, and is\r\n known for many inventions. What isn\'t as well known is that Franklin\'s\r\n favorite invention was a musical instrument.
\r\n\r\n
He called it the "glass armonica"\r\n after the Italian word for "harmony." It works on the wet finger\r\n around the wine glass principle. Franklin\'s idea was to nest a set of\r\n wine glasses inside of each other, one for each note, all mounted on a\r\n rotating spindle. Then you could play it with wet fingers, almost like\r\n a piano.

Otherworldly Sound
\r\nThe instrument became very popular\r\n in the late 18th century — even Mozart and Beethoven wrote music\r\n for it. But around 1810, they decided that its otherworldly sound would\r\n wake up the ghosts, so it was banned. It\'s been on the Endangered Musical\r\n Instrument List ever since. I\'ve been a musician since I was\r\n five, I\'m a classically trained pianist, and I have a degree from the\r\n California Institute of the Arts in harpsichord. One day I tripped over\r\n a CD of "music by Mozart for the glass armonica." Having no\r\n idea what a glass armonica was, I took it home, and that was it. I had\r\n to play this! I found that Finkenbeiner Inc. was blowing the glasses again,\r\n and off I went. I know of only a dozen performers in the world. I do about\r\n 75 performances a year, and have three CDs, with number four due out this\r\n summer.

The main reason I opted for a motor\r\n instead of a foot treadle is that I can play much better standing\r\n than sitting. The 1/28 horsepower motor that turns the spindle draws\r\n a whopping 16 watts (measured at the wall). But when I play outdoors\r\n at weddings or festivals, I often don\'t have access to an AC outlet. \r\nThe instrument is already set up to use 110 VAC, so the simplest\r\n thing to do was to get an inverter and a deep-cycle battery. The\r\n smallest inverter I could find at the local RV supply was 75 watts.\r\n With the smallest battery available at Costco (90 amp-hours), I\'ve\r\n run continuously for two-to-three days without a recharge (we also\r\n run a cash register with the same battery/inverter setup). \r\nMobile Solar Music \r\nBut I was concerned that\r\n I wouldn\'t have enough juice to make it through longer festivals,\r\n so I got a solar-electric (PV) panel to add to the system. The panel\r\n is a Solarex MSX-30 Lite, rated at 30 watts. It\'s a tough, bendable\r\n panel, which is perfect for taking on the road. At 24.4 by 19.6\r\n by 0.6 inches (62 x 50 x 1.5 cm), it\'s still easy to find space\r\n for it in the truck (along with everything else one needs for a\r\n festival). |

The solar panel is only connected\r\n when the battery is under load, so I don\'t have to worry about overcharging\r\n the battery. I hook the solar panel up to the battery in parallel with\r\n the load, with no charge controller. I wired a diode in series with the\r\n solar panel to prevent discharge through the PV when the sun goes behind\r\n a cloud.

I suppose I could get a larger\r\n battery, or find another way to run my instrument. But there\'s just something\r\n right about a solar-powered glass armonica. I think Ben Franklin\r\n would approve!

My instrument has a range of C4 (middle C) to G7, which is 3 octaves and a fifth. This is on the large side as armonicas go these days. The range of armonicas varies widely—there really isn\'t a \'standard armonica\' at present—so you\'ll need to consider who will be playing your music and the range of their instrument.
\r\nThe glasses are far enough apart that I can only reach a minor 6th in each hand at best. In the bass end (C5 and below) the glasses are a little farther apart so a perfect 5th is as wide as I can reach reliably. Some instruments have their glasses even farther apart, so again, you\'ll need to consider who will be playing your music and the characteristics of their instrument.
\r\nThat said, multiple glasses (in each hand) are natural to the armonica and sound terrific.
\r\n\'Turning the thumb under\' doesn\'t work on the armonica, so quick scales are especially difficult. Consider using hand-over-hand if you want a scale.
\r\nOnce a glass is singing, it\'s fairly easy to make it sing again, so trills and tremolos (of the piano variety) work well.
\r\nNotes can be sustained as long as the player can stay awake. Sustained high notes (above C6 or so?) can sound eerily like feedback, so be cautious about sustaining high glasses.
\r\nThe higher glasses (C5 and up?) speak fairly quickly (with practice). But the glasses in the bottom octave speak more slowly—quick passage work in the bottom octave or so is a bad idea.
\r\nThe glasses continue to ring after you release them. This effect is most pronounced in the bass end, not very apparent in the high end. (Like the harp, where the high notes die away quickly, but the bass notes ring for a long time). There is no practical way to damp an armonica glass (how do you noiselessly damp a spinning glass?)
\r\nVibrato works well.
\r\nThe armonica definitely has dynamics, but the whole instrument is on the quiet side so its dynamic range is not large.
\r\nAfter a glass is singing, crescendi and decrescendi work well.
\r\nI invariably amplify the armonica at performances—even just a little tasteful amplification makes a huge difference.
\r\nWrite glass armonica music on a grand staff, or if the part is simple enough a single staff is fine.

are great ways to reduce ledger lines.
\'Pizzicato\' of the glasses (flicking them with your fingernail)\r\nworks OK from about C6 up. Below that the result is more like a\r\npitchless thud.
\r\nA \'glissando\' of the glasses just doesn\'t work. (Unlike the lovely effect on the harp.)
\r\nI simply won\'t play the glasses with any sort of mallet. The result is uninteresting (a barely audible pitched thud) and I dare not risk breaking any glasses.
\r\nThe glasses are too close together to bow them with a violin bow.
