Other Music

Music Since 1995

In 1995, I moved to Seattle. I wanted to start fresh on a lot of levels, including musically. Up until then the music I wrote was more or less in the manner of classical forms that I wanted to understand (but developing my own harmonic and melodic idiom). After 1995, I was done with that.

So the music below is characteristic of what I'm doing now. Also, I produced all my CDs after 1995, so this list only represents music that isn't available on CD (yet?).

Music Before 1995

In this music I'm deliberately composing more-or-less in classical forms like 'fugues' and 'sonatas'. In it I figure it's OK to bend the rules here and there, but I really wanted to understand the craft.

Jack Reynolds—my first music teacher—encouraged me to make 'reference recordings' along the way—recording quality only as high as was easy (otherwise it doesn't get done). That's what many of these recordings are: I had a big cassette recorder with built-in microphones (that seemed to sound better than the other available choices) but many of these recordings are far from recording studio quality. I've done noise-reduction and what tweaking I can to make them better, but there's only so much one can do. The music still definitely comes through.
